Three-year PhD position at Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen

Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen (SDCC) is seeking a PhD student to join the Systems Medicine research group in the clinical research unit. The position is available now.

SDCC is the largest diabetes center in Scandinavia and is organized in four units: Clinic, Clinical Research, Education and Health Promotion.

The PhD research will be a collaborative project with the Type 2 Diabetes team (Henrik Vestergaard) at SDCC, Gentofte, with the matriculation in the University of Copenhagen.

The Position

The aim is to investigate the hypothesis that a patient’s blood molecular profile may be used to predict and obtain a more effective treatment recommendation.

The PhD student will apply metabolomics, using mass spectrometry fingerprinting methods, metabolic modeling and machine learning techniques, to the advancement of the understanding of Type 2 Diabetes. The PhD student will work in close collaboration with the clinic. This collaborative setup will work with samples from patients when first referred to our clinic and 1-year follow-up samples. New insights may potentially predict a response before undergoing a treatment and identify the most beneficial intervention.

What we offer

We offer an exciting multidisciplinary research environment with top-class laboratory and office facilities. A friendly and sociable atmosphere and intercross collaborations and research disciplines are characteristics of the SDCC. We have large networks of national and international relations offering great possibilities for synergies with groups outside the house.

Qualifications

The candidate must hold a master’s degree in the fields of chemistry, biochemistry, biology or physics by the start of the PhD program. The candidate will have an interest in informatics and diabetology.

Creativity, independent thinking, good communication skills and the ability to work in a team are all important qualities. The successful candidate will be responsible for the daily management of his/her research project in coordination with the supervisor and other members of the group.

Recruitment and employment

The PhD candidate will be offered a full-time position for a period of three years. Employment will be in accordance with the relevant collective agreement within the Capital Region of Denmark.
