Consultancy as Anaesthesiologist combined with a Clinical Professorship in Anesthesiology with special focus on patients with co-morbidity

 

A clinical position as consultant of Anaesthesiology at the Department of Anaesthesiology at Zealand University Hospital is open for appointment from as soon as possible.

 

The position as consultant is combined with a 5-year externally funded position as Clinical Professor in Anaesthesiology at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, with a special focus on patients with co-morbidity.

 

With this new position the Department of Anaesthesiology, Zealand University Hospital wishes to strengthen the leadership in clinical research and teaching in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen, with focus on perioperative pathophysiology and evidence-based treatment of patients with extensive co-morbidity.

 

It is a requirement that the applicant is accepted for appointment of both the professorship and the consultancy.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Organization:

The Region of Zealand has a population of approximately 836.000 citizens, who are under the care of three hospital units. The Zealand University Hospital constitutes one of these units and the hospital, at Køge and Roskilde together with Nykøbing Falster, currently has approximately 800 beds and cover most medical and surgical specialties. In 2027, the University Hospital in Køge will be opening a brand-new super hospital. This hospital will help support the region’s vision of ensuring patient treatment continuity and establish the framework for a flexible, future-proof hospital offering in Region Zealand. This new super hospital will see Zealand University Hospital grow to 1.5 times its present size, making it a treatment centre for patients across the region.

 

Zealand University Hospital has an extensive educational activity, and currently heads the candidate part of the medical education in the Zealand Region. In 2024, it is planned that a full doctoral medical education will be placed in the Zealand Region with the base at ZUH in Køge. It will be a major task for the current position to participate in the teaching of medical students in the anaesthesiological speciality.

 

Clinical functions and focus areas of the department

Zealand University Hospital Køge is a level 2 trauma center and admits acute patients around the clock.

The Department of Anaesthesiology specializes in perioperative medicine, airway management, postoperative pain treatment and ultrasound guided regional anesthesia. The Intensive Care Unit has a special interest in sedation, delirium, rehabilitation and late complications following ICU treatment.

 

Al together ZUH, Køge, Roskilde and the Nykøbing Falster branch, has 46 operating theatres, which cater for several major types of surgery. These include faciomaxilliary surgery, oral surgery, ENT/head and neck surgery, orthopaedic surgery, general surgery, gynecology and obstetrics, plastic- and breast surgery, urology, vascular surgery and ophthalmology.

 

  • Intensive Care Unit (22 beds). Level 2 treatment of medical and surgical patients including dialysis.
  • Non-malignant Pain Clinic with multidisciplinary treatment of chronic pain.

 

The department is committed to highest level of quality of care with a strong focus on research, and teaching.

The Department of Anaesthesiology has a research unit, Centre for Anaesthesiological Research, headed by a chair professor in Anaesthesiology and currently includes >15 of Ph.D. - and Scholar students. The main research focus areas include postoperative pain, chronic pain, regional anesthesia, treatment of delirium and rehabilitation after ICU treatment, and perioperative medicine.

 

Research and teaching

With the new position as a consultant in Anaesthesiology and Clinical Professor of Anaesthesiology, the Department of Anaesthesiology wishes to strengthen leadership in clinical research and teaching. The main research focus will be on perioperative pathophysiology and evidence-based treatment of patients with extensive co-morbidity. Furthermore, research-based teaching will provide state of the art evidence and knowledge of perioperative teaching to students.

 

Qualifications

Applicants must be board-certified specialist in Anaesthesiology. Since the consultancy mostly will be allocated to providing anaesthesia for vascular surgery, applicants have to be familiar with this subspeciality.

 

Conditions

In order to be considered, the applicant must send an application to both the Faculty (the professorship) and to the hospital (the consultancy) cf. the simultaneously advertised position of the professorship. Appointment is conditioned by the fact that the applicant obtains both positions. This also applies to the applicants who are already employed as consultants at Zealand University Hospital.

 

Salary and conditions of employment as consultant are as agreed between the Danish Regions and the Danish Association of Medical Specialists and between the Capital Region/Region Zealand and University of Copenhagen.

 

As clinical professor, at least 50 % of the working time will be allocated to academic tasks (e.g. research, teaching, evaluation tasks and communication with the public) in agreement with the Head of Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Copenhagen. The remaining time will be allocated for clinical work in agreement with the head of the Department of Anaesthesiology, Zealand University Hospital. The clinical professor will receive secretarial or technical support equivalent to 50 % of a full time secretary position from the department of Anaesthesiology. Additional support and details on the working conditions must be negotiated with the head of the Department of Anaesthesiology, Zealand University Hospital.
